News: Car Free Day comes to London

London will be reimagined as a car-free city on Sunday September 22nd

As part of the Mayor of London’s work to improve air pollution and reduce car emissions, plans have been put in place for London’s biggest ever Car Free Day celebrations. Sunday 22nd September will see over 20km of roads across the capital closed for the day, including most of the main business district in the City of London. Tower Bridge will be closed to traffic entirely, and will instead be home to group yoga and meditation sessions.

Air pollution is one of the biggest health risks in London, with the Mayor revealing that more than two million people live and work in areas that exceed the legal limits for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2).

This year’s celebrations come after Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, launched the first Ultra Low Emission Zone in April, which aims to deter vehicles with high emissions from driving within Central London.

Sadiq Khan said in a statement that: “London is leading the way in innovative measures to improve air pollution and I want this year’s Car Free Day events to be the best of any world city. This will be a great opportunity for us all to leave our cars behind and explore our streets by foot, or by bike. We’ve called our range of events ‘Reimagine’ so that Londoners get an idea of what some of the busiest parts of our city would be like without cars and traffic.”
