News: France to implement new eco tax on flights

France to join other European countries in implementing an environmental tax on flights.

In an effort to combat climate change a new eco-tax will be introduced on all flights from French airports with the proceeds being used to support investments in sustainable transport, including rail.

From 2020, tickets in economy class for flights within the EU will be subject to a €1.50 tax, the lowest on the spectrum. The highest tax (€18 a ticket) will be on business class tickets to destinations outside of the EU. The tax will not apply to incoming or connecting flights.

The French Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne stated that the tax is expected to raise around €180m in its first year. The announcement comes after widespread protests forced the French government to abandon its 2018 plans for a fuel tax rise.

A similar tax is already in place in several other European countries, including Germany. Their eco-tax adds between €8 and €45 to ticket prices.
