News: London sees more air passengers

London's airports are on track to have their best year to date

London’s biggest airport, Heathrow, has announced it’s on track to top 81 million passengers in 2019, the first time in its history. In July they saw over 7.75 million flyers pass through the airport, and their traffic is up 1.4% on 2018. With Heathrow working on their master plan for a third runway and a major expansion, the CEO John Holland-Kaye is quoted as saying: “We are clear that expansion at Heathrow will not come at a cost to the environment, which is why we are working with the industry and government to develop environmental targets that will ensure growth is managed sustainably both now and with expansion.”

Across the capital, and a favourite with business travellers, London City Airport has recorded its busiest month on record, with nearly 491,000 passengers counted in July 2019, a 19,300 improvement on the previous year. This increase means London City is on track to see over 5 million passengers this year.

London’s other major airports – Gatwick, Luton and Stansted – all had record years in 2018. Gatwick saw over 46 million passengers through its gates, and Stansted saw an increase of 8.1%, to take its figures over 28 million. Luton had an impressive 16.6m passengers in 2018, despite being in the middle of a major redevelopment, which saw a new terminal open in December. This redevelopment will allow the airport to increase its annual capacity to 18m passengers by 2020.
